Spotlight #4 – 52 Pick Up

Oct 29, 2011

All right, the dust has settled from the 52 new DC titles, and here are some of the staffs picks for total hit/ biggest surprise. All of us would agree, from the start we looked forward to Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Action Comics because of the teams on the book. Green Lantern was not in need of any real help after coming out of the war and the emerging new ring corps. Justice League was a shoe in, Jim Lee never disappoints and we wish that he would never leave the book. Justice League #2, this week solidified he is the biggest talent in the DC bullpen. Leaving us all wanting more, on the edge of our seat waiting, begging for the next issue! The good news, Cat Woman is back to being a thief and not trying to save Gothm city from itself. Batgirl can walk but lacks all of Oracles confidence, Jason Todd is way less whiny then he has been in the last few years, and Batman looks amazing with Capollo behind the pen. Best work from him so far. The Aquaman title proves that there is no such thing as a bad character, just bad stories. It refreshing that he acknowledges, he is a second string character proving through the writing his potential to be one of the A team. Geoff Johns has raised Aquaman back if not past where Peter David ever took him!

The biggest surprise and number one pick is, All Star Western. The story is a fresh view into, not only Johna Hex, but Amadeus Arkham and the wild wild west of Gotham. This one slipped in under the radar and exceeded all of our expectations from the first page of issue one, to Arkhams internal dialog about Johna Hex’s relationship with his mother. The story continues into issue two which is another change up from the past as most of Johna Hex stories were just single issues. Moritat’s art is fantastic from city splash pages to detailed bar room brawls and the incredible gun fight that just took place in this weeks  issue two. More to follow as the cards are dealt.
